Privacy Policy
Your books stay yours.
Folio collects no personal data. Here’s exactly what stays on your device, and what doesn’t.

On your device
Folio keeps your imported books, titles, reading positions and activity, achievements, profile name and photo, welcome answers, and preferences in the app’s private storage. It uses them only to run your library and settings. The developer has no access.
No account, ads, or tracking
Folio needs no account. There’s no analytics, advertising, tracking, or third-party SDKs, and no app servers. Nothing about your books or reading is sent to the developer.
iCloud sync
Where available and enabled, your books, titles, reading positions and activity, achievements, and profile sync through Apple’s CloudKit to your private iCloud database. Settings and welcome answers don’t sync.
The developer can’t access this data. Apple handles it under its own privacy policy, and it counts toward your iCloud storage. Manage it in Settings → your name → iCloud. Folio also works on a single device without it.
Free book catalogs
Explore fetches books from Project Gutenberg, the Internet Archive, and OpenStax. Requests include only what’s needed, like a search term or category, never personal identifiers or reading history.
These services may see your IP address and request details, handled under their own policies.
Title suggestions
On supported devices, Apple Intelligence can suggest a book title from its filename, metadata, and opening text. This runs entirely on your device and is never sent anywhere.
Photos and files
Folio uses the system photo picker, so it only receives the profile photo you choose. It resizes and stores it locally, synced privately if iCloud is on. It never asks for your whole photo library.
Folio only opens files you select or share to it. It keeps its own copy and never moves or changes your originals.
Permissions and children
Folio doesn’t ask for location, contacts, camera, microphone, tracking, or notifications. It has no chat, user content, ads, or purchases, and collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Some classics in the free catalog contain mature historical themes.
Keeping and deleting your data
Your data stays on your device, or in your iCloud if sync is on, until you delete it. You can turn off iCloud sync or delete your data at any time:
- One book: delete it in Folio to remove its file, title, and position. With sync on, it’s removed from your other devices too.
- Everything on device: delete the app.
- iCloud data: Settings → your name → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → Folio.
